Every once in a while you meet someone or in this case a couple whose warm smiles, beautiful personalities, personal challenges, talents put to use and outlook on life inspire you to look inward appreciate what you have, your health, your talents no matter how minimal and life.
Today I met Jill and Richard, an adorable couple about our age that are doing the loop in their 25 foot McGreger. Richard has removed the mast and had a canvas top made which makes their boat look like a power boat. He has built cabinets, redone the galley area and Jill has sewn a string of pockets around their berth for storage, made curtains and more. They shared their accomplishments and their dream of doing the loop, for the second time, What made them so extraordinary is that Jill has one arm and Richard has battled MS for 20 years! Richard lovingly talks about Jill's independence and Jill talks about Richards strength and fortitude.
I don't know many people who could live together for any length of time on a 25 foot sailboat that was less than 10 foot beam without strangling each other. But what Richard said to me was priceless and something I will remember for a long time.
"We love the closeness, our little boat provides, being together for 24 hours a day after so many years of only seeing each other late evenings and weekends. It's wonderful!"
We got up at 6:30 the next morning to see them off. What a wonderful breath of fresh air they were.
If we could clone them humanity might have a chance!
